Business process management is changing as organizations seek greater efficiency, stronger client relationships, and the ability to adapt across industries. For companies serving diverse sectors, sustainable growth depends not only on consistent service but also on systems and teams capable of responding to changing requirements.

Mamtaa Nitturkar, Founder & Managing Director of The Connections, is an entrepreneur and business leader whose journey with the company began in 2011 with a seven-seat operation serving primarily manufacturing clients. The business had a focused foundation, but its dependence on one sector also presented a limitation to long-term growth. As the company developed, Mamtaa began looking beyond its immediate scope and considering how its capabilities could serve a broader range of industries.

Her story reflects a practical approach to growth, where diversification, strong systems, sound judgment, and deliberate risk-taking work together to create a business prepared for its next chapter.

A journey built on adaptability

The-Connections started its journey in 2011 in the manufacturing sector. Under Mamtaa Nitturkar’s leadership, the company has grown and diversified its services across industries such as BFSI, Manufacturing, EdTech, Telecom, Automobile, Media, Healthcare, Tours and Travels, and Real Estate. The move required the organization to adapt to different customer expectations, compliance requirements, and service environments. Over time, this broader market presence helped establish a more versatile operating model while expanding the company’s reach.

Today, the business has grown to more than 600 employees across six delivery centers in Pune, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai. For Mamtaa, that growth represents more than an increase in scale. It reflects the development of an organization capable of responding to different industry requirements while maintaining the operational foundation needed to deliver consistently across locations and sectors.

Challenging the conventional BPO Model

The conventional approach to building a BPO often centers on choosing one vertical and developing deep expertise within it. Mamtaa deliberately took a different path. What some viewed as a lack of focus became, in her view, a way to protect the business from being overly dependent on the performance of one industry.

The strategy also pushed the organization to become more adaptable. Each industry brought different compliance requirements, customer expectations, service levels, and operating demands, requiring teams to develop processes that could adjust without compromising consistency. Working across these sectors meant learning how to respond to very different business environments while maintaining the same underlying standards. Over time, that exposure strengthened the organization’s process capabilities and gave its teams a broader understanding of how service delivery needs to evolve from one client environment to another.

That flexibility has become an important part of how The Connections delivers value. Its experience across distinct sectors has helped the organization build process muscle that can be applied across different requirements without losing operational discipline. The decision to diversify therefore did more than create additional revenue opportunities. It built an organization capable of adapting to changing client needs and market conditions, while reducing its dependence on the fortunes of any single industry.

A broader path to growth

Challenge

The Connections began in 2011 as a seven-seat operation largely dependent on manufacturing clients, creating a narrow foundation with limited room for expansion.

Action

In 2016, Mamtaa Nitturkar chose to rebrand and reposition the company, expanding into BFSI, EdTech, Telecom, and Media, and building capabilities across multiple sectors.

Outcome

The Connections grew to 600+ employees across six delivery centers in Pune, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai.

Building systems that scale

As The Connections grew, Mamtaa Nitturkar recognized that personal involvement could not remain the measure of quality. In the early years, she was closely involved in client escalations, hiring decisions, and process changes, believing that direct oversight was essential to maintaining standards. Over time, however, that approach risked making the founder the point through which too many decisions had to pass. What initially helped establish control could eventually limit the organization’s ability to grow with speed and consistency.

The shift came with a greater emphasis on systems that could carry the same standards without constant intervention. Clear quality frameworks, reporting structures, escalation protocols, and training processes created consistency across teams and locations. Standardization became the backbone of delivery, while client-facing processes could still be adapted to the specific requirements of each industry. This balance helped teams understand what needed to remain consistent and where flexibility was necessary to meet individual client expectations.

This approach also changed how responsibility moved through the organization. Teams gained clearer ownership of decisions, supported by defined processes and accountability, reducing the need for every issue to return to the founder. It allowed The Connections to scale without making growth dependent on one person’s capacity. For Mamtaa Nitturkar, building systems was ultimately about creating an organization where quality could remain consistent as the business expanded across cities, sectors, and increasingly complex client requirements, while giving her greater room to focus on strategy, relationships, and the company’s broader direction.

People, judgment, and client trust

As the organization matured, Mamtaa’s leadership focus shifted increasingly toward people and relationships. She sees client trust as something that cannot be created through processes alone. While systems can establish consistency, strong partnerships depend on understanding client priorities, staying close to their expectations, and remaining personally invested in the outcomes they seek. For her, being accessible to clients and understanding the realities behind their requirements is an important part of building relationships that extend beyond routine service delivery.

Her approach to building teams has also been shaped by a hard-earned lesson: technical skill does not always translate into sound judgment. Someone may follow a process accurately yet struggle to make the right decision when circumstances fall outside the standard playbook. Mamtaa therefore looks for people who understand why a process exists, not simply how to execute it. That understanding helps employees respond thoughtfully when situations require judgment, while giving her greater confidence in delegation and reducing the need for constant oversight.

The result is a leadership model that gives capable teams room to take ownership while keeping accountability firmly in place. By combining trust in people with clear systems and expectations, Mamtaa Nitturkar has created greater decision-making capacity within the organization. This allows teams to respond to clients with greater independence while ensuring that important decisions remain aligned with the standards and values that guide The Connections as it continues to grow.

Turning operational efficiency into growth

For Mamtaa Nitturkar, operational efficiency has value beyond reducing costs or improving internal metrics. She sees a missed opportunity when businesses treat operations and business development as separate functions. Improvements in turnaround time, quality, or service delivery become more meaningful when the organization can translate them into a stronger client proposition and show how they support broader business needs. Efficiency, in this view, should create visible value for the client rather than remain an internal measure of performance.

This perspective encourages closer alignment between operational and client-facing teams. When a process improvement can quickly become part of a conversation with a client, it can open the door to expanded responsibilities and deeper engagement. Instead of allowing efficiency gains to remain buried in internal reports, The Connections can use them to demonstrate tangible ways the business is improving client experiences and outcomes. This also gives client-facing teams a stronger basis for showing how operational improvements can support changing requirements or create opportunities for additional services.

The approach reflects a broader principle in Mamtaa’s leadership: operational discipline should create opportunities, not simply control costs. By connecting what happens inside the organization with the value clients experience, efficiency becomes part of the company’s growth strategy. It allows The Connections to turn stronger processes into meaningful client conversations while strengthening relationships and creating room for sustainable business growth.

The next chapter for the connections

The Connections is approaching its next phase with a measured approach to expansion. Rather than pursuing every available opportunity, Mamtaa Nitturkar is focused on entering another industry vertical where the organization can apply its existing operational expertise while developing the depth of knowledge needed to serve a new market effectively. At the same time, strengthening relationships with existing clients remains central to the company’s growth strategy. This balance allows the business to explore new opportunities without losing sight of the relationships and capabilities that have supported its growth.

Technology will play an increasingly important role in that direction. AI is being integrated into the way services are delivered, audited, and improved across accounts rather than treated as a standalone initiative. The broader vision is to evolve The Connections from a traditional outsourcing partner into an AI-enabled operations partner, combining human expertise with intelligent automation to deliver greater efficiency, quality, and business insight.

The company is also open to strategic technology partnerships where they can accelerate these capabilities. However, Mamtaa’s priority remains clear: build expertise, execute well, and expand with purpose. For The Connections, sustainable growth is less about rapid expansion and more about developing the capabilities, relationships, and operational strength needed to succeed wherever the business chooses to compete next.

Leading with deliberate risk

Mamtaa’s leadership journey challenges the idea that disciplined leadership means cautious leadership. For Mamtaa Nitturkar, caution was never the strategy; it was deliberate risk, backed by process discipline. Her experience has been shaped by decisions that required her to move beyond familiar territory, whether diversifying into new industries or expanding the company across multiple cities. Each move involved uncertainty, but she approached that uncertainty with a clear understanding of the systems, people, and capabilities needed to support the decision. For her, taking a different path has always required preparation rather than hesitation.

For Mamtaa Nitturkar, risk and discipline are not opposing ideas. Entering a new market or scaling an operation requires the willingness to make a bold decision, but sustainable execution depends on preparation, process clarity, and a capable team. This balance has allowed her to pursue unconventional opportunities while maintaining a practical understanding of what each decision demands. Rather than taking risks simply for the sake of growth, she looks at whether the organization has the foundation to execute effectively.

Her approach has also influenced the culture she seeks to build within The Connections. Teams are encouraged to take ownership and make decisions while understanding the purpose behind the processes they follow. This creates an environment where people can act with confidence while remaining accountable for their choices. In that context, deliberate risk becomes part of responsible growth, supported by the operational discipline required to turn ambitious decisions into practical outcomes.

Bharat 2.0 Conclave – Shakti Edition

Participating in the Bharat 2.0 Conclave – Shakti Edition gave Mamtaa an opportunity to reflect on leadership beyond the day-to-day responsibilities of running a business. Among the many conversations at the event, her interaction with Kiran Bedi stayed with her most strongly. Bedi’s clarity, discipline, and conviction reinforced the importance of taking responsibility and remaining grounded in one’s values, particularly when leadership decisions become difficult. The conversation also offered Mamtaa a moment to consider how those principles have shaped her own approach to leading a growing organization.

For Mamtaa Nitturkar, the significance of platforms such as Shakti extends beyond recognizing women leaders. She believes their value lies in creating relationships that continue after the event, with leaders sharing opportunities, collaborating on practical business challenges, and supporting one another’s growth. Sustained engagement can turn a moment of recognition into meaningful professional connections and broader business impact, particularly when conversations lead to practical collaboration and mutual support.

The experience also prompted her to reflect on the people who supported her own journey and the responsibility that comes with that perspective. She sees value in sharing lessons honestly, including the challenges behind business growth, and helping the next generation of women entrepreneurs develop the confidence and access to opportunities needed to build their own paths. For her, the lasting value of such platforms lies in carrying that sense of responsibility beyond the event itself.
