A Message of Pride and Encouragement
As Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams embarks on her return journey to Earth after spending nine months aboard the International Space Station (ISS), Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his heartfelt wishes through a special letter. Expressing deep admiration for her achievements, Modi conveyed that all 1.4 billion Indians take immense pride in her perseverance and contributions to space exploration.
In his letter, Modi wrote, “Even though you are thousands of miles away, you remain close to our hearts.” He emphasized that people across India are praying for her well-being and the success of her mission. Further reaffirming India’s strong bond with its accomplished daughter, Modi expressed his eagerness to welcome Williams to India after her return. “After your return, we are looking forward to seeing you in India. It will be a pleasure for India to host one of its most illustrious daughters,” he stated.
A Symbol of National Pride
The letter was personally delivered to Williams through astronaut Mike Massimino, following a meeting between Modi and Massimino at a recent event. The gesture highlights India’s deep connection with Williams, whose roots trace back to Gujarat. Union Minister Jitendra Singh shared the letter on X (formerly Twitter), underscoring the nation’s admiration for her achievements.
Sharing the letter, Singh wrote, “As the whole world waits, with abated breath, for the safe return of Sunita Williams, this is how PM Narendra Modi expressed his concern for this daughter of India.” The letter has resonated deeply with Indians, reinforcing the sense of national pride surrounding Williams’ contributions to space exploration.
Touched by the message, Williams expressed her gratitude to PM Modi and the people of India. Her journey has been followed closely, with millions awaiting her safe return and celebrating her resilience.
Williams’ Return to Earth
Sunita Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore have begun their journey back to Earth aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. NASA announced their departure on X, stating, “They’re on their way! Crew9 undocked from the Space Station at 1:05 am ET (0505 UTC). Reentry and splashdown coverage begins on X, YouTube, and NASA+ at 4:45 pm ET (2145 UTC) this evening.”
The astronauts departed the ISS at 10:35 am IST, with their journey expected to take approximately 17 hours before their scheduled landing. Williams and Wilmore had been stuck at the ISS since June last year due to propulsion issues in the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, which was initially meant to bring them back to Earth. The mission was extended as technical problems rendered the spacecraft unfit for their return.
As Williams makes her long-awaited journey home, her resilience and contributions to space exploration remain an inspiration for millions. Her return is being watched with anticipation, as India and the world prepare to celebrate the safe arrival of a space pioneer.
