Key Takeaways:

  • Google is investing $15 billion to build a massive global AI ecosystem.
  • The new facility will power services like Gemini and Google Search for users.
  • Visakhapatnam will now serve as a strategic landing point for international subsea cables.

Google on Tuesday launched construction of its largest India’s AI Hub outside the United States in Visakhapatnam, India, investing $15 billion to expand data capacity, boost AI services, and strengthen digital infrastructure.

Google Starts Construction On Landmark AI Facility

Google held a groundbreaking ceremony in Visakhapatnam, a coastal city in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, marking the start of its most significant AI infrastructure project outside the United States.

The company first announced the investment in October 2025, committing $15 billion over five years to build a large-scale artificial intelligence and data center ecosystem. The project is expected to support the growing demand for AI tools and cloud-based services globally.

“Today marks the first concrete milestone in Google’s largest commitment to India’s AI Hub digital future,” said Bikash Koley, vice president for global infrastructure.

Koley said the facility will form a “full stack AI ecosystem,” anchored by a gigawatt-scale data center campus designed to handle the high computational demands of modern AI technologies.

Project Aims To Power AI Growth And Global Connectivity

The planned campus will support key services such as Gemini and Google Search, both of which rely heavily on large-scale data processing and machine learning capabilities.

Data centers worldwide are expanding rapidly as companies race to store vast amounts of digital data and train increasingly complex AI models. Industry analysts say investments like this reflect the growing importance of infrastructure in India’s AI Hub economy.

Koley said the Visakhapatnam hub will also play a strategic role in improving global connectivity. The city is being positioned as a landing point for submarine internet cables linking India to Southeast Asia.

“By establishing Vizag as an international subsea gateway, we will add vital diversity from existing landings in Mumbai and Chennai,” he said. “This increases resilience and strengthens India’s digital backbone.”

Andhra Pradesh Positions Vizag As Tech Hub

State officials say the project could transform Visakhapatnam, a city of about 2 million people, into a major technology and innovation center.

“This is an exciting step as we build India’s most coveted AI and deep-tech hub,” said Nara Lokesh, information technology minister for Andhra Pradesh.

The development is expected to generate jobs, attract additional investment, and accelerate the region’s digital economy. New fiber optic routes linked to the project will further connect India with global data networks.

Koley described the initiative as a “pivotal moment” for both the company and India’s technology landscape, underscoring the country’s growing role in the global AI sector.
