  • Bagchi brings experience across banking, insurance, investment banking, and digital finance.

Anup Bagchi HDFC Bank CEO appointment takes effect on October 27, 2026, marking the first time in its nearly 32-year history that an external executive will lead the bank. The Reserve Bank of India has approved Bagchi’s appointment for a 3-year term.

Bagchi brings broad financial services experience

Bagchi is currently the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance and has been part of the ICICI Group since 1992. His career has covered several areas of financial services, including treasury, retail banking, wholesale banking, investment banking, and digital financial services.

Before his current role, Bagchi served as Executive Director at ICICI Bank and as CEO and MD of ICICI Securities. His experience across different parts of the financial services sector will now be applied to HDFC Bank, India’s largest private sector bank.

Anup Bagchi HDFC Bank CEO transition will begin after Sashidhar Jagdishan completes his current term on October 26, 2026. Jagdishan has led HDFC Bank since October 27, 2020, after succeeding Aditya Puri, who headed the bank from its incorporation in 1994 until October 2020.

The appointment makes Bagchi only the third chief executive to lead HDFC Bank since its incorporation. It also represents a change from the bank’s previous succession pattern, with an executive from outside HDFC Bank taking the top position for the first time.

Kaizad Bharucha, HDFC Bank’s Deputy Managing Director, had been considered among the potential candidates for the position. Bharucha has been on the bank’s board since 2014. His future role at the bank has not been specified.

Leadership change comes during a key transition

Jagdishan’s decision not to seek a third term preceded the appointment. His tenure is scheduled to end after 6 years at the bank.

The leadership transition follows changes at the bank’s board level earlier in 2026. HDFC Bank’s Part-Time Chairman resigned in March, after which attention turned toward the bank’s leadership and succession process.

For HDFC Bank, the change comes as the lender continues to manage a large and diversified banking operation serving retail customers, businesses, and institutional clients. Bagchi’s background spans several of these areas, including retail banking, wholesale banking, investment banking, and digital financial services.

The bank’s regulatory filing highlighted his experience across the financial services industry while announcing the appointment.

HDFC Bank’s shares rose 1.36% to ₹719.35 on the BSE on the day of the announcement, even as the broader market faced weakness.

Anup Bagchi HDFC Bank CEO term will formally begin on October 27, 2026. His appointment begins a new leadership period for HDFC Bank after Jagdishan’s 6-year tenure and marks the first external CEO transition in the bank’s history.
