Following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local Kashmiri, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed a strong and decisive response against those responsible. Speaking at a government event in Madhubani, Bihar, the Prime Minister began his address with a moment of silence for the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and later condemned it in the strongest terms.
He described the assault as not only a brutal act against innocent civilians but an affront to India’s very soul. “From Kargil to Kanyakumari, there is grief and rage. This attack was not just on tourists; it was on the spirit of India,” said PM Modi. Stressing unity in grief, he noted the diverse backgrounds of the victims — from Bengal, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Gujarat, and Bihar — underscoring the attack’s impact on the entire nation.
The Prime Minister asserted that the perpetrators and their masterminds would face consequences beyond imagination. “The time has come to raze whatever remains of the terror haven,” he declared, hinting strongly at Pakistan, which India accuses of sponsoring terrorism on its soil.
Global Message and Firm Resolve
In a pointed shift to English, Prime Minister Modi sent a direct message to the international community, affirming India’s unwavering commitment to rooting out terrorism. “India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the earth,” he said. He reassured that the nation’s resolve remains unbroken and thanked global leaders and nations for standing with India during this period of mourning.
This high-profile statement followed Modi’s return from a shortened diplomatic visit to Saudi Arabia, cut short in response to the attack. Back home, he immediately chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security to map out India’s strategy. As part of its response, India has announced a series of strong diplomatic measures against Pakistan, signaling a significant escalation in bilateral tensions.
Diplomatic Fallout and India’s Countermeasures
The Indian government has begun a wide-ranging diplomatic effort against Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. Measures include suspending the Indus Water Treaty and shutting down the Integrated Check Post at Attari. Additionally, India has revoked the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals and declared several Pakistani defence personnel as “persona non grata.” The strength of both countries’ High Commissions will also be reduced, with India planning to scale down Pakistan’s diplomatic presence in New Delhi from 55 to 30 by May 1.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments, reiterating India’s policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism. “We will not only pursue the attackers but also expose those orchestrating from behind the scenes,” Singh stated. He assured the public that the government’s response would be “loud and clear.”
The Pahalgam terror attack is one of the most severe in recent times and has reignited the country’s determination to tackle terrorism with renewed intensity—both through military readiness and strategic diplomacy.
