Microsoft announced a $3 billion investment to expand AI and cloud in India, as revealed by CEO Satya Nadella on Tuesday. This commitment marks the company’s largest investment in the country to date, aimed at leveraging India’s technological expertise and cost-effective environment to drive profitability. According to a company spokesperson, the two-year investment will focus on enhancing AI capacity and upskilling millions of Indians in AI-related technologies. This is in addition to Microsoft’s earlier announcement of an $80 billion plan for AI-enabled data centers by fiscal 2025.
India has become a strategic hub for global tech giants, with leading executives from companies like Nvidia and AMD also pledging significant investments in the region. Nadella, speaking at an event in Bengaluru, highlighted the importance of India’s tech talent, stating that the country is poised to surpass the United States as the largest developer community on GitHub by 2028.

With over 20,000 employees in India spread across 10 cities, Microsoft aims to foster the local tech ecosystem while utilizing the vast pool of skilled professionals. Nadella emphasized the company’s commitment to expand AI and cloud in India, mentioning its contributions to projects like GitHub Copilot, Microsoft’s generative AI tool for developers. He noted that India ranks second only to the U.S. in contributions to Microsoft’s AI initiatives.
The company has ambitious plans to train 10 million Indians in AI by 2030, building on the 2.4 million individuals it upskilled last year. This initiative aligns with Microsoft’s broader mission to create an AI-ready workforce and accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies in India. Nadella’s visit was part of the “Microsoft AI Tour,” which showcased the company’s latest innovations and highlighted India’s growing importance in its global strategy.

Satya Nadella, who was born in India, enjoys widespread admiration in the country, where engineering careers are highly esteemed. His keynote address in Bengaluru attracted hundreds of attendees, including tech professionals eager to learn about Microsoft’s latest developments.
Prashant Bhanawat, a software engineer whose company uses Azure AI services, described the event as a unique opportunity to witness new products in the pipeline and hear directly from Nadella. “This is a chance for us to see the products in development before they are rolled out and, of course, to see Satya Nadella,” he said, after waiting for hours to enter the venue.
