Tata Motors PV Sales Plunge to 42-Month Low in June 2025 | Business Viewpoint Magazine

Tata Motors, one of India’s leading automobile manufacturers, has reported a steep decline in its domestic passenger vehicle (PV) sales for June 2025. Tata Motors PV sales recorded 37,083 PV units wholesale in the domestic market, a significant 14.8% drop compared to 43,524 units in June 2024. On a month-over-month basis, sales also fell by 10.77% from 41,557 units in May 2025. This performance marks the company’s lowest monthly sales figure since December 2021, when Tata Motors sold 35,300 PVs. The decline reverses the upward trajectory that had started in early 2022, with sales consistently above 40,000 units in the months that followed.

Including exports, the total PV sales stood at 37,237 units in June 2025, down 14.64% from the 43,624 units sold during the same month last year. While domestic demand faltered, export volumes offered a minor uplift; 154 units were shipped in June 2025, up 54% from 100 units in June 2024.

Electric Vehicles Show Resilience Amid Market Pressure

Despite the overall slump, Tata Motors PV sales found support in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, which to provide a silver lining. The company sold 5,228 EVs in June 2025, registering a 12.26% growth from 4,657 units in the same month last year. The surge was fueled by positive consumer response to new EV models such as the Harrier EV and a refreshed version of the Tiago EV. Electric vehicles remain a strategic focus for the automaker, and the continued investment in this space appears to be paying off, even as the broader market softens.

In Q1 FY26 (April to June 2025), Tata Motors sold 16,231 EVs, a modest 2% decline year-on-year, highlighting a relatively stable performance in an otherwise challenging quarter. The company’s renewed push in the EV segment is expected to gain further traction, with upcoming models and refreshed line-ups likely to influence sales positively in the coming months.

Overall Sales Performance and Industry Outlook

Combining both commercial and passenger vehicle sales across domestic and international markets, Tata Motors sold 2,10,415 units in Q1 FY26. This represents a 6% drop compared to 2,25,891 units sold in Q1 FY25. For June alone, the company recorded total domestic sales of 65,019 units, marking a 12% year-on-year decline from 74,147 units in June 2024.

Tata Motors PV sales reached 1,24,809 passenger vehicles in Q1 FY26, registering a 10% drop from the previous year’s figures. However, the company remains optimistic. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., acknowledged the volume pressures faced by the industry, particularly in May and June. He noted the EV segment’s strength and reaffirmed Tata’s commitment to aligning wholesale and registration volumes. New models like the Altroz and Harrier. EVs are expected to further boost demand, especially in the hatchback and SUV categories.

As the auto sector navigates a period of sluggish growth, Tata Motors PV sales are expected to regain momentum, with the company banking on innovation and EV strength to stay ahead of the curve.
