The government is offering households up to ₹500 worth of free gas and waiving security fees to encourage a shift from LPG to piped natural gas (PNG), in a move widely described as Govt Offers Free Gas, aiming to cut import dependence and ensure stable energy supplies. Officials hope more families will adopt cleaner and more reliable fuel for daily cooking needs under this initiative.
Govt Incentivizes PNG Shift for Households
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is actively pushing households to adopt PNG through financial incentives and simplified procedures. As part of the Govt Offers Free Gas drive, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing and Oil Refinery), said consumers in areas with PNG access will be notified by registered post and given three months to transition from LPG.
The government cites lower import dependency for PNG compared with LPG as a key reason for the push. “Our import dependency on LPG is much higher compared to PNG. Hence, it is more logical to shift to PNG wherever possible,” Sharma added.
So far, around 2.2 lakh consumers have already switched to PNG. Delhi authorities have waived road restoration charges and allowed pipelines to be laid round the clock to speed up expansion. Sharma noted, “In the last 25 days alone, about 2.5 lakh new PNG connections have been given.”
LPG Supply Stable, Black Marketing Curbed
Despite promoting PNG, the government assures households that the LPG supply remains sufficient. “No dry out in domestic LPG supply. Don’t fall for rumours. We have sufficient energy supplies,” Sharma said.
Authorities are also cracking down on illegal LPG trading to stabilize supply chains. Alongside enforcement actions, the Govt Offers Free Gas campaign complements broader efforts, including about 2,700 raids across states that led to nearly 2,000 cylinders being seized and large allocations of commercial LPG distributed nationwide.
Online booking continues to dominate LPG demand, with 92 percent of refills booked digitally, Sharma noted. Additional kerosene allocations have been provided as an alternative fuel option in several states and union territories.
Government Monitors Global Energy Risks
Amid rising tensions in West Asia, the government maintains focus on energy security. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Donald Trump on March 24.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met the Iranian Ambassador to discuss regional developments affecting energy security. Officials say the Govt Offers Free Gas initiative is part of a wider strategy to ensure households have reliable, affordable fuel while reducing dependence on imports and preventing supply disruptions.
