Bharti Airtel has surpassed 650 million mobile customers worldwide, becoming the second-largest telecom operator globally by subscriber base, according to GSMA Intelligence, reflecting rapid international expansion and sustained growth beyond India.

Airtel Reaches Global Scale With Record Subscriber Growth

Bharti Airtel announced it has crossed the milestone of 650 million customers, positioning the company as the world’s second-largest telecom operator by mobile subscriber base.

Industry analytics firm GSMA Intelligence confirmed the ranking, highlighting Airtel’s steady expansion across emerging markets in Asia and Africa. The milestone marks a significant achievement for the India-based telecommunications company as competition intensifies globally.

The growth reflects increasing mobile adoption, expanding data usage, and continued investment in network infrastructure across Airtel’s operating regions.

Gopal Vittal, executive vice chairman of Bharti Airtel, said the achievement carries added responsibility for the company.

“Achieving the milestone of 650 million customers to be the second largest operator globally is a great responsibility for us to serve our customers better every day,” Vittal said in a statement.

Expansion Beyond India Drives Momentum

While India remains Airtel’s largest market, the company’s international operations have played a key role in its rise in global rankings.

Airtel operates across multiple African countries, where smartphone adoption and digital connectivity continue to grow rapidly. Analysts say expanding data services, mobile payments, and affordable connectivity have strengthened Airtel’s presence in these regions.

Telecom analyst Neha Singh of TechInsights said Airtel’s strategy focuses on scaling operations in high-growth markets. “The company has balanced strong domestic leadership with international diversification, which reduces dependence on a single geography,” Singh said.

Industry observers note that demand for mobile data and digital services is rising worldwide, especially in developing economies where millions of users are coming online for the first time.

Rising Competition Shapes Global Telecom Landscape

Airtel’s milestone comes amid intense competition among global telecom providers racing to expand subscriber bases and invest in next-generation technologies such as 5G networks and digital platforms.

Telecommunications consultant Rajiv Mehta said subscriber growth alone is no longer enough. “Operators must combine scale with service quality, network reliability, and digital ecosystem offerings to remain competitive,” he said.

Airtel has continued investing in network upgrades, spectrum acquisition, and digital services to improve customer experience and support growing data demand.

The company’s rise reflects broader changes in the telecommunications industry, where emerging-market operators are increasingly challenging traditional leaders through rapid subscriber growth and cost-efficient expansion models.

With 650 million customers now on its network, Airtel joins a small group of global telecom giants serving hundreds of millions of users, signaling the growing influence of Indian companies in worldwide digital connectivity.
