  • Continued financial pressure highlights a need for disciplined expansion

Air India has appointed former Ethiopian Airlines Group chief Tewolde Gebremariam as chief executive officer and managing director, marking a significant leadership transition as the airline continues its turnaround efforts amid financial and operational challenges.

Leadership Transition Marks Strategic Shift

Air India CEO Tewolde Gebremariam will succeed Campbell Wilson, who is set to step down on 30 September after completing his notice period. The airline has not disclosed the exact date when the new chief executive will assume responsibilities, stating that onboarding and transition timelines will be announced later.

The appointment follows a multi-month search process after Air India’s return to Tata Group ownership in 2022. The airline operates under a joint ownership structure, with Singapore Airlines holding about a 25% stake following the merger with Vistara, while Tata Sons retains the remaining share.

Air India CEO Tewolde Gebremariam brings more than a decade of leadership experience from Ethiopian Airlines, where he served as chief executive from January 2011. During his tenure, the airline recorded significant expansion across key metrics. Annual revenue increased from about $1 billion to $4.5 billion, fleet size grew from 33 aircraft to 130, and passenger traffic rose from 3 million to 12 million before the pandemic.

Operational Experience Aligns With Expansion Plans

His experience in building aviation infrastructure is also notable. Ethiopian Airlines invested more than $700 million in areas such as maintenance and repair facilities, cargo operations, aviation training academies, flight simulators, and hospitality infrastructure. This aligns with Air India’s current priorities of improving engineering reliability, workforce training, and hub efficiency.

Air India CEO Tewolde Gebremariam began his aviation career with Ethiopian Airlines and held multiple commercial and operational roles, including regional director for India and Southeast Asia. His leadership also covered periods of global disruption, including the decline in air travel during the pandemic and operational challenges following the Boeing 737 MAX incident in 2019.

Air India stated that its board evaluated both internal and external candidates before selecting Gebremariam based on his experience in airline turnaround, operational reliability, safety management, and workforce development.

The leadership change comes at a time when Air India continues to face financial pressure. The Air India Group reported a loss exceeding $2 billion for the financial year ending March 2026. The turnaround process has been affected by delays in aircraft deliveries, cabin upgrades and ongoing operational inefficiencies.

Despite these challenges, the airline has undergone a structural transformation in recent years. Under Wilson’s leadership since July 2022, Air India completed its merger with Vistara, introduced a refreshed brand identity, placed significant aircraft orders, and initiated modernization across fleet, technology, and customer operations.

The appointment of Air India CEO Tewolde Gebremariam reflects the airline’s continued focus on execution and scaling operations as the airline moves into its next phase of development.
